Interview with Joyce Anthony, author of ‘Storm’

April 6th, 2007

Hi Joyce!  Its so great to have you on my blog(s) - could you tell me a bit about yourself?
Thanks for having me here, Kai :-)  I am a writer, sometimes photographer, advocate--and a whole host of other titles.  While I've had numerous articles published, Storm is my first full-length novel.

1) What was your favorite part of writing 'Storm'?
My favorite part was all the surprises.  Usually writing non-fiction, I'm not used to characters just popping in when they feel like it :-)  The skeleton in the outhouse really surprised me and Maggie was the best surprise of the whole book.
2) Give us a quick summary of "Storm"?
Sam, an old sea captain turned lighthouse keeper finds a baby on his island one day after a storm.  He raises the baby and, when he passes, Storm sets out in search of his true identity--with only the idea that he must seek a whirling rainbow.
During his journey, he comes into contact with many of those society has forgotten or ignored.  He manages to make major changes in their lives--and then he discovers who he really is--and that is when the entire world changes.
3) Do you draw anything from any influences?  Are there themes within Storm that reflect something important to you?
Yes, the sexually abused child is one I was able to identify with completely.  All the others, I have at one point or another known someone in that position--each represents thousands.
4) Who is your favorite up and coming writer(s)?
That is a hard one--there is so much talent out there right now.  I honestly can't pick just one, although Marvin Wilson and Jamison Wolf have caught my attention with their writing.
5) Who is/are your favorite writers?
Rod Serling and Richard Bach will always hold that position.  In my mind, these two men are literary geniuses.
6) What was the hardest thing you did with Storm?
Honestly, the hardest thing I did was watching one of my characters die.  I actually cried and got angry and basically through an out and out tantrum when that happened!!
7) Got any advice for any new writers out there?
Don't listen to those who say being a writer isn't a "real" goal.  If your soul pushes you to write--then write.  You may not sell today, tomorrow, or even a year from now, but if you stick with it and believe in both yourself and your work, you will one day see that work in print.
8) What's next for you?
I am working on a book titled Spirit of the Stallion.  This is a non-fiction work entailing the life--and triumph--of a bipolar child.  I then have two other works lined up--one a historical paranormal and the other an early-reader book.
9) Do you have a fan list we can join?
I don't have a fan list--want to start one? :-)  I do have a monthly newsletter for writers that I would love to have people sign up for.  The address for that is: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/KaleidoSoulstormwatch/

10) What do you hope your readers will feel or react like when reading your books?
I want any emotion to be strong--I want readers to feel any emotion strong enough that they completely examine their life and strive to make some change in the world around them.

its been a pleasure having you talk about your book, thank you so much Joyce! Any final statements or comments you'd like to make?
Thanks, Kai :-)  I'd love to have your readers visit my website
http://joyceanthony.tripod.com/ and stop by the other tour stops for the month.  The schedule can be found on my website.  Yesterday I visited Karina Fabian at http://www.virtualbooktourdenet.blogspot.com/   and tomorrow I stop by to see Jay Hudson at http://www.jayhudsononwheels.blogspot.com/    I look forward to any and all comments!!!

Stories that awe

January 10th, 2007

When we talk about the stories that move us, we talk about love, laughter, fear.  But there are some that strike a different chord within us - the one that only a child can truly feel, fully - and that's awe.

Awe is a wierd emotion - it can leave us feeling breathless, exhilierated, amazed, agahst.  But mostly it leaves us with a profound sense that the impossible, just for that second of wonder, became possible.

Last night, my partner and I watched MirrorMask - I'm a huge Niel Gaiman fan anyway, so didn't need to be asked twice, but I was amazed at this movie - it flowed like butter, and was incredibly evocative, deeply riddled with themes.  The sphinxes were a lot of fun, and I thought that the story was really quite good as well.  But my feeling of awe stems from something else entirely.

I've met Niel, and he was talking about Mirrormask back then - and I remember thinking and wondering whether it would live up to a third of the way he carries his stories himself.  I'm still wondering.

Prompt

Each week, we'll provide you with a prompt that you can use and share in the comments if you like...

Twiested tales - tell a story that's based on a myth that you've twisted.  It could be fiction, fact, or a hybrid.
